Celebrations on the cards

While current Covid-19 regulations do not allow for too many activities, Brakpan is hoping that they will be able to do a lot more in a few months’ time.

Rugby clubs across the country will not remember 2020 fondly as there was no action on the field due to Covid-19.

Many will be hoping next year is much better.

If Brakpan Rugby Club has things their way, 2021 will be a huge year as they celebrate their centenary year.

“We have been planning for the 2021, 100 years celebrations for some time now. Although everything is going well, unfortunately there might be one negative that can influence the process,” said club chairperson Harry Nieuwenhuis.

“Covid-19 and government will ultimately decide what we will be able to do and what will not be able to do.

“Saying that, however, we are very positive to host our community and supporters all over South Africa with several activities.

“We are finalising our programmes and should Covid-19 still be a problem in 2021, we will have to adjust accordingly.”

While current Covid-19 regulations do not allow for too many activities, Brakpan is hoping that they will be able to do a lot more in a few months’ time.

“It is important for our activities to be structured properly as everything will be linked to our playing schedule that is not available yet and once finalised we will sign off on the full programme for 2021,” said Nieuwenhuis.

With the hope that the lockdown restrictions will ease, the club will be looking to play their regular season which includes the normal senior Peregrine League, Gold Cup Rugby and Valke Currie Cup Rugby.

The club is also planning to hold a host of activities such as a formal event to launch all the celebrations.

Brakpan also wants to have events such as golf days, reunions in line with home matches against Springs and Boksburg, a match against a Valke invitational side and activities for women’s rugby.

Brakpan Rugby Club is planning to host a number of events for their women’s side in 2021.

There has also been talk of Golden oldies rugby for the club’s stalwarts and a sevens tournament.

“The idea is to have a great festival of rugby and we aim to involve all our schools and our community with the Valke Rugby Union, SA Rugby as well as the Ekurhuleni metro in this very special celebrations,” said the chairperson.

“We also want to honour the players and administrators who started this very special club in 1921, all the members that gave us our club and stadium and the privilege to be part of a rugby history and culture that only Brakpan Rugby Club players, administrators and sponsors uniquely and proudly own.”
