Woest still aims at showpiece

The tournament was supposed to take place this year but was postponed due to Covid-19.

The u-21 Action Cricket World Cup in Australia was supposed to take place last month, but like most things in 2020 it did not happen.

The tournament was moved to October, next year.

This means Brakpan’s Karen Woest has to wait an extra year before playing in her second u-21 and third overall junior world cup.

“It is a huge adjustment mentally,” she said when asked how difficult it has been having to wait an extra year.

“I also have to think about a lot of things such as the cost of going to the World Cup.”

The 20-year-old is clearly passionate about the sport as she jokes about having played cricket “since being in the womb”.

With her and her teammates finally allowed to train to together, Woest said things are getting back into place.

“We are playing practice matches,” she said.

She admits that even though she trained on her own during the lockdown, things were not easy.

“It was difficult because you don’t have anybody bowling to you or that you can bowl to. But the bowling, batting and fielding was fine when we got back. What I struggled with was the fitness,” she said.

Brakpan’s Karen Woest will be looking forward to playing in the u-21 Action Cricket World Cup in Australia in October 2021.

The six months of hard lockdown was the second time Woest had gone for an extended period without playing the sport since she started when she was 13.

An injury forced her out of action for a year in 2017.

The coronavirus has made things difficult for the young player. Because of the pandemic, the fund-raisers that were planned to help her raise the estimated R45 000 that she needs for the trip to Australia were halted.

This means she is looking for sponsors to help her.

Potential sponsors may contact the South African u-21 team manager, Braam Oosthuizen, on 083 458 1253.
