Wrestlers given green light

The coronavirus has frustrated many people around the world and the local wrestling club felt the pain.

Members of the Brakpan Wrestling Club are happy to finally be allowed to train again after the lockdown.

Although contact is still not allowed, the club’s members are back to fitness training at the Brakpan Indoor Centre.

This is after the club met all the government’s safety requirements for Covid-19.

“It’s been hard,” said the club’s Anandi Erasmus.

“You won’t believe how much the youngsters have missed wrestling. We feel like we are in seventh heaven now.”

Even though the club members have been away from the indoor centre, Erasmus pointed out the wrestlers have stayed in good shape.

“Many of them were training on their own at home, so the fitness levels are not bad,” Erasmus said.

“We’ll have to wait until contact is allowed to see where their wrestling skills are at.”

The coronavirus has frustrated many people around the world and the local wrestling club felt the pain.

Earlier this year the club was hoping top competitor Martin Erasmus would qualify for the Olympic Games but the qualifiers and the big event in Tokyo were postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic.

“He was looking forward to it but next year he has an opportunity to qualify,” said Erasmus.

This year has not been easy, with wrestlers having accepted that there will be no competitions for the rest of the year.

For now they have to listen out for a government ruling on when they will be allowed to have contact at training and for competitions to begin.

“We are just waiting for legislation from the department of sport to give us direction,” said Erasmus.
