Football fields set alight

The grass on the fields was burned and left in a state that would make it almost impossible to use.

The 2020 Easterns football season will not be happening and for some that may be a relief as the fields at the Brakpan Sports Grounds are not in a good condition to play on.

“Even if the season was to start we wouldn’t be able to play on these fields,” said Brakpan Spurs captain Jabulani Munemo.

Munemo does not know who burned the fields, and requests for information from the City of Ekurhuleni have been unanswered.

There are a number of teams that normally use the fields.

Teams such as Spurs and Dolphins use the local grounds as their home venue.

Next season will see the launch of the Brakpan League and more teams will be using the grounds.

“How will we be able to play?” asked Munemo.

This year’s league did not take place due to the Covid-19 outbreak, but if action returns in 2021 then the fields will have to be in good condition for all the clubs that will be using the stadium.

The new league will feature clubs from Brakpan, Leachville and Tsakane.

“There is already a board of directors appointed for the league,” said Munemo.

Council had not commented at the time of going publication.
