Brakpan in Zimbabwean thriller

The Brakpan side will be hoping the experience in Zimbabwe will help them in the 2020 season when it kicks off next year.

Brakpan Spurs held their own as they narrowly went down 3-2 in a friendly against Chivhu Stars last Saturday, at Garwe Stadium in Zimbabwe.

Spurs were under pressure early on and went behind in the 20th minute of the match.

The side from Brakpan, however, would not lie down as winger Lungelo Mathebula dispossessed a defender and scored the equaliser.

Both teams had opportunities to go ahead after that, but the first half ended with the scores tied at a goal-a-piece.

Spurs took a lead in the 51st minute of the match through a well-taken free kick by Sdumo Munene and looked to be on course for a victory outside South Africa.

It was not to be, however, as the home side levelled matters late in the game. Then, in the dying minutes of the thriller, Munene went from hero to villain when a cross came in and he deflected the ball into his own net to give the Zimbabwean side the victory.

“Though we lost it was a great game and a good experience to play outside of the country,” said Spurs’ captain Jabulani Munene.

The Brakpan side will be hoping the experience in Zimbabwe will help them in the 2020 season when it kicks off next year.
