‘Panne’ lose again, but show promise

This weekend the team will go up against Dragons away from home.

They might have suffered another loss in the cross-border Volcano Trophy, but Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV showed that they are moving in a better direction after their clash with a strong Pretoria Rugby Club outfit under the floodlit Bosman Stadium on the night of May 11.

Despite going down 40-33 to the Pretorians, the ‘Panne’ dotted down five tries to pick up a bonus point in defeat.

“Our team played much better versus a strong Pretoria side and we again lost in the dying minutes of the game,” said club chairman Harry Nieuwenhuis.

“The problems we have had with our lineouts seem to have been solved.

“Hooker Mauritzio Roetz was the Man of the Match and showed 100 per cent true grit after being on the bench all season thus far.

“He used his opportunity and played extremely well.”

Tries were scored by Reg Müller, Roetz and Divan Brooderyk while the remainder of the points came from the boot of fullback PJ Beukes.

The club’s second XV Lilywhites went down 24-39 on the day while the third side were defeated 12-38 by the men from the capital city.

The Brakpan u-21 side enjoyed a fantastic 55-36 victory over Springs in their Valke Merlin u-21 League encounter.
