Panne need to step their game up

It has not been the best of times lately for Brakpan Rugby Club.

The club, so used to winning over the decades, has found it difficult to return to its glory days.

The Panne first XV suffered another defeat on April 27, this time by 32-21 to Vereeniging Rugby Club at the Bosman Stadium in the Valke Rugby Union’s Peregrine League, the points and result of which will carry into the cross-border Volcano Trophy (the strength-versus-strength B-League competition played between clubs from the northern provinces of South Africa namely, the Valke, Blue Bulls and Leopards unions).

The club’s second XV (the Lilywhites) were thumped 38-0 in the preceding match against Vereeniging while the young guns of the Brakpan u-21 side were the only team to make the club proud with a victory.

“It was not a good weekend again,” said Harry Nieuwenhuis, chairperson of Brakpan Rugby Club.

“We can’t get this team (the first XV) to switch one and, as was the case against NWU Vaal, we gave them the game again in the last six minutes.

“It is time for a big step-up from the guys.

“There are no more excuses with the Volcano Trophy having started.

“The senior boys can learn from the youngsters, they know how to win games.”

In the first team match the tries for the Panne were scored by Tobie Strydom and Reg Muller with the rest of the points coming from full back Harry Nieuwenhuis.

Brakpan will travel to Pretoria this weekend for clashes with Tuine in the Volcano Trophy.
