Bosman Stadium hosts festival of rugby

Harry Nieuwenhuis, chairman of Brakpan Rugby Club, said: “We had a very special day."

The Bosman Stadium was alive with festivities when Brakpan Rugby Club hosted a successful Rugby Day on March 2.

Harry Nieuwenhuis, chairman of Brakpan Rugby Club, said: “We had a very special day.

“Bosman Stadium was looking great and the crowd attendance way exceeded our expectations.

“We want to thank not only the Brakpan community but all the teams visiting from Pretoria, Limpopo, Springs, Boksburg, Vereeniging, Kempton Park, Benoni, Johannesburg and more.

Sydney van Huyssteen, full back for the Brakpan Rugby Club second XV, tries to keep the ball alive as he is tackled out of play by Tuks defenders at the Brakpan Rugby Day on Saturday.

“We had several great games played on the day.

“Unfortunately, the main game did not go according to our expectations and our first team, after great games versus Noordeliks and QBR recently, we were just not good enough for the tempo of rugby played by Tuks and we lost the game 77-0.

“We are all hugely disappointed with our effort, but this game highlighted where we are as a team, and the answer came in an emphatic way.”

Other Brakpan results on Saturday included a 52-12 demolition job from Brakpan’s u-21 side against East Rand United while the Brakpan second XV, the ‘Lilywhites’, narrowly lost 19-17 to Tuks’ second side.

The club’s Golden Oldies defeated Kempton Park’s second team by five tries to two.

“We also want to thank all the Valke Rugby Union referees, our club management and all the supporting staff who made the festival possible.

“To host a day like this with 16 clubs and 35 teams is not the easiest of tasks, but they excelled and we are proud of the way the day was managed.”
