‘Panne’ win by a point in Polokwane

Brakpan Rugby Club is aiming to bounce back from a forgettable 2018 campaign and have been hard at work in preseason training since October last year.

The club’s first XV toured to Polokwane this past weekend with a squad of 30 players to test their squad depth.

There the ‘Panne’ went up against Noordelikes on February 16 who have been a regular feature in the South African Rugby Union’s Gold Cup.

In that intense friendly encounter it was the men from Bosman Stadium who would emerge victorious by a single point after the full 80 minutes.

Brakpan won the high-scoring match 39-38.

“We are happy with the positive start to the year,” said club chairman Harry Nieuwenhuis.

Tries were scored by captain Tabu Tau (two), Martin Steyn and PJ Beukes (who bagged a hattrick of tries on the day).

The Brakpan fly half Beukes also scored all of the other points from his boot (three conversions and a penalty kick), 24 points in total.

Meanwhile, the club’s second XV, the ‘Lilywhites’ played at the Delmas Rugby Day on Saturday.

The team went down 19-7 to Benoni Northerns Rugby Club while the young guns of the u-21 XV were 17-0 winners over the same opponents.

In a fortnight’s time, Brakpan Rugby Club will host their Rugby Day on March 2 at their ‘House of Pain’, Bosman Stadium.

“We will have 35 teams playing all day with the likes of Tukkies, QBR, UJ, Noordelikes, Springs Boksburg, Benoni, Kempton Park, Sasol, Vereeniging, Nigel, NWU and our Golden Oldies, all contributing to what should be a rugby festival like we have never hosted before at Bosman Stadium,” said Nieuwenhuis.

More details will be posted soon
