Saloon drivers are champions

Rietkuil Raceway in Mpumalanga hosted their Champ of Champions event on December 29 with no less than six competitors from the Rock’s 1660 modified class supporting this event.

The Rock Raceway’s 1660 modified saloon drivers once again made their club proud by bringing home two coveted Champ of Champions trophies from different venues across the country over the festive period.

Jannie van Rensburg, Shawn Smidt, Ben Venter, Pieter Ferreira, Gustav Botha and Collette Kruger all teamed up for this final event of 2018.

It was close and competitive racing with Jan Pienaar from Rietkuil making our local drivers work hard behind the wheel.

In the end, it was Ferreira who took top honours closely followed in second place by Botha and Pienaar completing the podium.

The Rock Raceway 1660 competitor Pieter van Staden had meanwhile travelled to Richards Bay to compete in their annual Champ of Champs holiday race on the same day.

While still getting to grips with his newly acquired race car, the combination of former Rock driver Marius van der Broek’s 1660 car and seasoned campaigner van Staden, ensured yet another first place trophy at a Champ of Champs for local 1660 modified saloons.

The 1660 modified saloon class is at present one of the most closely competitive classes on the oval track.
