Snooker keeps retired folk busy

Some senior citizens at the Brakpan retirement village of Alan Woodrow Park in Dalpark are in a league of their own.

The village has their very own snooker team and hopes to make a significant improvement on their final seventh overall position in the 10-team Retirement Village Snooker League played between retirement villages from across Ekurhuleni.

The league runs from January to August and gives retirees the chance to stay busy.

“There are six players per team,” said Peter Callahan, a resident at Alan Woodrow Park and member of the village’s snooker team.

“We have two singles players and two sets of pairs who battle it out against the other villages.

“Each village plays each village at home and away.

“This year was our second time in the league and we hope very much to improve in the new year.

“They run a Singles Championship as well as an Open Singles Championship over the course of the league season. Last year Clive Hancock, an Alan Woodrow Park resident, won the Open Singles Championship.

Callahan added they are always trying to get more retired people to play snooker.

“It is open to all people over the age of 55, even if you don’t live in a retirement village.

“There are some villages that don’t always have enough players.

“We can also teach and coach interested players to get them up to league standard.”

Callahan said the Alan Woodrow Park’s team kit this season was sponsored by the former professional football players of the old National Football League, and he thanked them for their sponsorship.
