Matt places a respectable twelfth

Sherwood Gardens resident Matthew Bartlett (19) returned home on September 25 after competing at the United World Wrestling Junior World Wrestling Championships in Trnava, Slovakia over the weekend.

The former Hoërskool Stoffberg learner put in a good showing while representing South Africa on the mat to finish in a respectable 12th overall place in the 74kg freestyle category which featured 26 other strong competitors in the weight division.

He opened his account with a 10-9 win in his first match against Chinese opponent Yi Li.

The Brakpan Wrestling Club member was then defeated in his second match against the United States of America’s Kevin Lewis (who would eventually go on to claim gold with an overall first position).

He then faced Estonia’s Erik Reinbok in his third match.

Despite losing the match the South African managed to score points that saw him finish in 12th position.

The young wrestler achieved the goals he set out for at the competition and gained invaluable international experience on the mat.

He will now be hard at work in preparation for national trials that will take place on November 3.
