MTB race was off the chain

Spring was in the air and, for a change, the organisers and the participating riders got to enjoy some good weather as opposed to the cold and rainy conditions experienced in previous years.

Just over 300 mountain bike (MTB) riders gathered at the start of the Transvaal Galvanisers Mountain Bike Race in Dalpark Extension One, at the Van Dyk Dam on the morning of September 2.

Athol Davies (organiser of the Transvaal Galvanisers Mountain Bike Race) and Daleen Visser (principal of Felicitas School) smile for a photograph at Sunday’s race. Proceeds from the race will go to the school.

“The race was excellent, first class,” said race organiser Athol Davies.

“We experienced no serious problems on the day and the route was perfect.

“But for a bit of wind, the weather was good to us too.”

All proceeds from race entries will go towards the Felicitas School for Intellectually and Physically Disabled Learners in Brenthurst.

According to Davies, the final amount would most likely be known by September 10 once online entries had been accounted.

The race featured three different distances (60km, 35km and 10km).

In the men’s 60km race it was Jacques Greeff who arrived at the finish line first.

He was followed in by Neal Derek Corbett in second position and Ryan Shehad in third place.

Danelle Keulder crossed the finish line as the first woman home followed by Kerry-Ann Byrne Papash in second and Kim Kohl rounding off the top three places.

Declan Strydom (14) from Alberton and Ané Binneman (11) from Boksburg enjoyed the Transvaal Galvanisers Mountain Bike Race on Sunday.

Aaron Heyneke was the first man home in the 35km distance race followed in by Arno Labuschagne in the second position and Kian Victor in the third position.

Rene Schoeman was the first woman home in that particular race with Karen Bradshaw and Susan Sadler rounding off the top three for women.

The shorter 10km race was won by Tyrone Care de Jager with Werner le Roux placing second and Carel Faber de Jager the third rider home.
