Panne ‘working hard to silence the critics’

The ‘Panne’ enjoyed a clean sweep on the day with all three of their senior teams emerging victorious on Saturday.

After a 63-21 manhandling at the hands of East Rand United the weekend prior, Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV bounced back to winning ways with a 78-19 demolition job against the Kempton Wolves in their Valke Rugby Union Peregrine League encounter at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on June 30.

The second XV, the ‘Lilywhites’, enjoyed the taste of success with a 24-12 win while the younger u-21 side narrowly secured a 33-31 victory.

Brakpan Rugby Club chairman Harry Nieuwenhuis said that the wins should provide preparations for their away matches in Springs on July 7.

Discussing the first team’s encounter against Kempton the chairman said: “We had to experiment with the team due to the injuries to Danie Harding and the non-availability of PJ Beukes and Phillip Barwise as well as Pieter Nel, our star flanker, but the players who stepped in did very well to carry the team forward.

“The Panne have not enjoyed their best season this year, but the semi-finals are still on the cards for our first team and the u-21 side.

“We realise that our community and supporters must be a little disappointed with our form this season, but our team is bouncing back and we are working harder than ever to silence the critics out there who only support our teams when they beat everyone but are absent when it doesn’t go all that well.

“We are working with very young sides and they are growing every week.”

Tries in the first team match were scored by number eight Reg Muller, flanker Rocky Leighton-Mason (two tries), winger Willie Meyer (two tries), fly half Tabu Tau (two tries), full back Divan Brooderyk and lock Jo Meyer.
