What a year of Brakpan sport: June highlights

The year 2017 was a busy one for Brakpan’s sportspeople.

There were ups and there were downs.

This is the 2017 Brakpan year in review.

June

• The 2017 Comrades Marathon, a strenuous and punishing 86.73km up run journey on foot took place from Durban City Hall to Scottsville racecourse in Pietermaritzburg on June 4. Brakpan was represented by the Carnival Runners club as well as by a sole runner, Willie Benade, from Brakpan Athletics Club. Of the 18 Carnival Runners who signed up and entered the world’s oldest and longest ultra-marathon, only 13 managed to reach the final destination at Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.

• After a first round opening day defeat to Boksburg Rugby Club away from home at PG Park, Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV got their sweet revenge at Bosman Stadium on the night of June 9. The first side enjoyed a 21-13 victory over the Owls from Boksburg in the Valke Rugby Union’s Peregrine League.

• Kenneth Dube, Royal Oak Country Club’s golf director and club professional, was again top of the pile in the pro scores at the Professional Golfers Association of South Africa’s Sun International Heineken Pro-Am at the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City.

• Six-year-old Louise du Plooy became the first junior girl member in the history of Brakpan Pigeon Racing Club. Louise managed to win the club’s open section in Dewetsdorp with her blue chequer hen.

• The third round of Motorsport South Africa’s national drift series, SupaDrift at Carnival City was certainly one for the books. Over 3 500 petrol heads were treated to two days (June 30 to July 1) of world class competitive drifting as 35 professional drivers competed for the top spot and for championship points. Jason Webb stole the show as he powered his “Monstang” (Monster Energy Roush Mustang) to victory in its debut performance at SupaDrift.
