What a year of Brakpan sport: March highlights

The year 2017 was a busy one for Brakpan’s sportspeople.

There were ups and there were downs.

This is the 2017 Brakpan year in review.

March

• Brakpan wrestler The Jackal came up short at the South African Pro Wrestling (SAPW) “Home of Hardcore” event on Saturday, when his rival Hector Payne defeated him in a “barbwire match” to become the new SAPW Hardcore Champion at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre.

• The first EFC event (EFC 57) of 2017 at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena was a cracking affair. Scotsman Danny Henry avenged the only loss of his EFC career on the night, a historic night to mark the first event of the year. In beating Igeu Kabesa, he regained the featherweight belt and promised to dominate the division for the foreseeable future. In the co-main event, heavyweights Elvis Moyo and Mike Vermeulen had to get through each other for a potential shot at Andrew van Zyl’s belt. Moyo wasted no time, delivering a devastating TKO to Vermeulen after being dropped early in the first round.

• Brakpan Rugby Club’s indomitable front row forward Ian Oosthuizen returned from Scotland and was signed by Boland Rugby to play in the Currie Cup this year.

• The Dan Triangle Karate Club’s Jaun-Pierre Vermeulen won a bronze medal for kumite fighting at the KSA South African All Styles Championships.

• State Mines Country Club held its Summer Club Championships on March 25 and March 26. Vaughn van Deventer was the A-Division champion, Thomas Ntshagase the B-Division champion, Len Fritz the C-Division champion and Cynthia Dicks the women’s winner.

• State Mines Country Club amateur Dylan Mostert and rookie Kyle Barker executed a well-laid game plan to bag a pair of maiden IGT Challenge Tour titles in the Wanderers Better Ball Challenge on March 29.
