What a year of Brakpan sport: January highlights

The year 2017 was a busy one for Brakpan’s sportspeople.

There were ups and there were downs.

This is the 2017 Brakpan year in review.

January

• Brakpan’s drag racing husband and wife duo, Wouter and Elise Havenga from Dalpark Extension Five, called it quits after years of serious competition. The couple announced at the last round of drag racing nationals, held at Tarlton Raceway, that they would be retiring from competitive national racing. “We have been competing for 11 and seven years, respectively, and decided that it is time to pursue other avenues in motorsport, on a more social level,” said Wouter. “We have both won various titles and I still hold two South African records.”

• United Cricket Club returned to action in the Eastern Premier League on January 15 to play their final first-half fixture of the 2016/2017 season, away to Actonville Spurs at Lord’s Cricket Grounds. Nothing but victory would suffice for the Brakpan-based team in order for them to finish in the Top Eight and avoid being one of the bottom four clubs that would be demoted to the new Premier B League. They remained in the top league with a 38-run win over Actonville.

• Royal Oak Country Club’s golf director and club professional, Kenneth Dube, together with Henk Alberts and Johannes Smit, represented South Africa at the PGA Europe International Team Championship Tournament in Antalya, Turkey, from January 17 to January 20.
