United defeated at halfway mark

After their unbeaten run was brought to an end in the Eastern Premier League the weekend prior, Brakpan’s United Cricket Club suffered another defeat in the competition on December 3.

The scheduled 50-over match against defending league champions Kempton Park Cricket Club was reduced to 20 overs per innings due to wet run-ups at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton.

It would be United’s last match of the 2017 part of the 2017/2018 campaign as the league has reached its halfway point.

Batting first United’s Eden Links put up the biggest fight, hitting 57 runs in the innings that ended 146/4 in 20 overs.

He was followed in the scoring pile by Rynard de Lange who hit 37 runs.

Kempton Park’s opening duo of the two Wesleys, Marshall (66 runs) and Coulentianos (39 runs), helped the host team chase down the United score with two deliveries to spare with a score of 150/5 to give them a five-wicket defeat and a second straight defeat for Gamble’s men.

Commenting on the result the United captain said: “We played a T20 because there were ‘wet run-ups’ that were not bad at all.

“We put a good score on the board on a slow wicket.

“Links batted really nicely and was backed up by a couple of other contributions.

“We bowled well for the majority of our bowling innings, but a few key moments never went our way.

“We put on a good fight though and it could have gone either way on the day.”

The league will recommence on January 14.

Meanwhile, the club’s Promotion League XI defeated Germiston by five wickets at Hosking Park’s A-field on Sunday.

Bowling first, United’s bowlers bowled their visitors for 181 runs in 43 overs.

Kurt Thomson (4/35 in 10 overs), Adrian de Vries (3/23 in six overs) and Donovan du Randt (2/32 in nine overs) were the stars of the show with the leather.

In their reply, United chased down the Germiston score within 35 overs to set up the victory.

Brendon Frost (53 runs) and Juandre Johnson (43 not out) helped guide the home team home.
