Finding winning momentum

“It’s a good bonus point win and we hope to keep the momentum going against Duduza this weekend.”

It is two wins out of two for United Cricket Club’s Premier XI in the Eastern Cricket Union’s elite club competition.

Following on from their opening day win at Hosking Park against Bedfordview last week, skipper Justin Gamble and his men travelled to Prince George Park in Boksburg to play Boksburg Cricket Club on Sunday.

Boksburg won the toss and elected to bowl first on their home wicket.

André Johnson at the pinnacle of the batting order again performed with the bat for his new club.

His 65-ball 70 runs (seven fours and five sixes) helped set up a score of 243.

He was ably backed by number three batsman JP Meade who scored a steady 48 runs from 71 deliveries while number six batsman Wickus Germishuizen hit 43 runs from 44 runs.

Boksburg’s Bryce Parsons caused the most trouble with the ball for United’s willow-wielders.

He achieved excellent bowling figures of 5/28 in 10 overs.

In United’s bowling innings, Ackter Rasul was the best of the batsmen scoring a slow 62 runs from 105 balls at the top of the order.

Meade was the ‘chief destroyer with the leather’ for the Brakpan-based team.

He picked up bowling figures of 3/37 in nine overs and was supported well by Rynard de Lange (2/38 in 10 overs).

Aidan Justus, Morne van der Merwe and Wickus Germishuisen each claimed a wicket as the Boksburg order was wrapped up in the 40th over with just 155 on the board to give Gamble’s team an 88-run victory.

“Some more good momentum for us,” said the United skipper.

“We were sent in to bat on a pretty green track.

“André was superb again at the start and some more good contributions from JP and Wickus got us to what was probably par on the day.

“Rynard and JP gave us another good start with the ball and got Boksburg three wickets down before they had 15 runs on the board. Steady bowling throughout meant they couldn’t score easily.

“It’s a good bonus point win and we hope to keep the momentum going against Duduza this weekend.”

That match will be played at Hosking Park’s A-Field with the first delivery scheduled to be bowled at 10am.

The club’s Promotions League XI played out to a tied result in their match versus Springs Old Boys at Hosking Park.

Springs Old Boys scored 176/10 in 44 overs with United’s Alec van der Kruit (5/9 in five overs) doing the most damage.

Shaun Fourie was next best with statistics of 3/22 in eight overs.

With the bat, van der Kruit was again the top achiever.

He hit 52 runs, but the team fell agonisingly close, getting bowled out on a par score in 42 overs.

The Directors League team had some fun with the bat against Vosloorus on Hosking B.

They smashed 329/9 in their 50 overs with Adriaan de Vries falling four runs short of a century. Donovan Durandt also reached a milestone with 67 runs, as did Shane Wallace who hit 53 runs.

De Vries (4/36 in nine overs) then performed with the ball to set up a 99-run victory.

The young Colts League XI ensured an unbeaten Sunday for United with a 64-run win over Springs Old Boys.

Nathan Ainsworth (67 not out) and Nico Pieters Senior (61 runs) were the best batsmen in an innings of 284/4 in 40 overs.

Ruan Jacobs (3/35 in six overs), Jared Leff (3/38 in five overs) and Jayden Kelfkens (2/29 in six overs) helped get Springs all out in 39.1 overs on a score of 221.
