United raring to go

Efforts to get the metro to assist and take action seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

Brakpan-based United Cricket Club is looking forward to a challenging season, despite some worries about the facilities at their Hosking Park home base.

The Herald has, in the past, reported on the infrastructural and sewage issues that have hampered and dampened spirits around the club.

The issue of sewage spilling onto the outfield forced important Premier League matches to be cancelled in previous seasons.

A water leak on the club’s B-Field also caused some stress recently.

Efforts to get the metro to assist and take action seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

This has forced those at the club to implement their own plans of action to try and alleviate the problem.

Despite this, the club is looking forward to the 2017/2018 Eastern Cricket Union season.

According to Des Gamble of United, the club will field four senior Sunday sides (a Premier League XI, Promotion League XI, Directors League XI and a Colts XI) and a Saturday First League side.

Henk van der Kruit will take over the duties of head coach of the Premier XI after Franz Bezuidenhout decided to retire from the position.

The Premier League team will kick-start their season with the Eastern Premier T20 Competition, which starts on October 1.

Drawn in Pool A with Actonville Spurs, Bedfordview, Duduza, Kempton Park and Kwa-Thema, the team (led by skipper Justin Gamble) will be aiming for immediate success.

They get their first match underway at 9.30am against Duduza at Willowmoore Park B, then head to Lords Cricket Grounds in Actonville for an afternoon T20 clash against Kwa-Thema at 2.30pm.

On October 8 the team will play in Actonville again, this time against Bedfordview at 9.30 followed by the afternoon start against a tough Kempton Park outfit at Willowmoore A.

They play their final pool match against Actonville Spurs at Lords at 9.30am on October 15 and will hope to be in the semi-final later that afternoon.
