The good form continues for Brakpan
Brakpan Rugby Club enjoyed a fantastic day away from home when all three of their senior teams stormed to victories against North West University (NWU) Vaal in the Valke Peregrine League on July 15.
The club’s First XV remained on the heels of rivals Springs after a commanding 54-12 over the NWU students.
The “Panne” ran in eight tries on Saturday to further ensure that a home semi-final will come to the Bosman Stadium on July 29.
Harry Nieuwenhuis chairman of Brakpan Rugby Club said: “I am delighted with the club’s performances at this stage.
“The First team and the u-21 sides should have home semi-finals while the Lilywhites [Second XV] are currently second on their log.
“Our new-look First team is doing exceptionally well, scoring 50-plus points in the last three games, they are peaking at just the right time.
“Players like scrumhalf Tabu Tau, winger Sweef Potgieter, winger Juan Botha and centre Rubin Smith are all showing that they are ready for the Gold Cup, should we qualify.
“Gidion van Wyk, scrumhalf, showed his potential on Saturday and we expect a lot from him going forward while Man-of-the-Match lock forward Theo Becker, at 37 years old, is playing the best rugby of his career,” added the chairman.
Try-scorers for the Brakpan First side were Theo Becker (x2), Arra Jordaan, Dirk Grobler, Sweef Potgieter, Pieter Nel, Tabu Tau and Tommie Damba.
Hagen Mumba converted seven of the eight tries.
The team will, tomorrow (Saturday) host Reiger Park’s always bullish East Rand United (ERU) in the final game of the league stage of the tournament, ahead of the knock-out semi-finals the week after.
Other results on Saturday were:
• Lilywhites 41 – NWU Vaal 32.
• Brakpan u-21s 22 – NWU Vaal 17.
