Six-year-old set to soar in pigeon racing

The Gauteng Pigeon Union’s pigeon racing season started on the last weekend of May and will continue until September 30, and Brakpan Pigeon Racing Club is making history again.

“We are blessed with a new junior member, six-year-old Louise du Plooy, and she is our first junior girl in the club,” said chairman Etienne van der Walt.

Louise, a learner at the WK du Plessis School, flies pigeons with her grandfather Louis du Plooy.

“It seems as if this grandfather-and-granddaughter combination is going to give the other members some strong competition this year.

“Louise managed to win the club’s open section in Dewetsdorp with her blue chequer hen.

“The win is a remarkable achievement by a junior and will long be remembered.”

This past weekend the club’s pigeons were liberated from Dewetsdorp in the Free State approximately 400km from home.

The pigeons completed the journey in approximately five hours and 15 minutes, at an average speed of about 75km/hour.

The results were:

• Dewetsdorp Young Birds: 1 Piet Gerber, 2 Louise du Plooy, 3 Mark Viljoen.

• Dewetsdorp Open Birds: 1 Louis du Plooy, 2 Mark Viljoen, 3 Tom Jooste.
