Winning ways return to Bosman

Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV has issued a warning to the other teams in the Valke Rugby Union’s elite Peregrine League that they are not a done-and-dusted team just yet.

After suffering two defeats at the hands of Boksburg and Springs in their first three matches of the competition, their first win coming against Vereeniging, the team rediscovered their winning ways with a 52-18 home win over North West University – Vaal (NWU-Vaal) on Saturday, May 27.

Skippered by blond loose forward Wikus van der Berg, the team turned around their woes from last week.

Fullback Hagen Mumba scored one of the eight tries and scored 10 points with the boot, but it was the trickery of scrumhalf Thabu Tau who gave the spark in the win.

Tau, Wesley Nortier and Darlton Botha made a big impact from the bench.

Try-scorers on the day were Mumba, Dirk Grobler, Arra Jordaan, Sybrand van Der Merwe, Henrico van Eck, Juan Botha and Tau.

“It seems that our new young guns in the team are finding their feet and it looks like the winning form that we are used to is back,” said club chairman Harry Nieuwenhuis.

The team will this week face a tough opponent in the form of Reiger Park’s East Rand United away from home tomorrow (Saturday).

East Rand United just lost to Vereeniging by 35-33 on Saturday, May 27 and will be eager to bounce back from the disappointment.

The clash will be the final match of the first round of the competition.

• In other Brakpan Rugby Club results from Saturday, the club’s Lilywhites (second XV) romped to a 38-0 drubbing of NWU-Vaal while the club’s u-21 side ensured a clean sweep of victories with a score of 42-22.
