United still eyeing a play-off spot

United Cricket Club’s Premier XI played Kwa-Thema at St Dunstan’s College, in Benoni, in the Eastern Premier League on Sunday, March 4, and kept their good winning form going.

The team has been using the private school facility as its home base since their Hosking Park headquarters, in Brakpan, was ravaged by rain and sewage spills (comment from the Ekurhuleni metro in this regard has not been received).

Skipper Justin Gamble won the morning coin toss and elected to bat first.

United lost openers Vaughn Humphrey and Rian van der Merwe with just 20 runs on the scoreboard and then Gamble 18 runs later, until number three batsman JP Meade (who has been showing solid form with the willow recently) and Aidan Justus joined up at the wicket.

Meade (who would go on to score 86 runs from 113 deliveries) and Justus (who scored 72 runs from 87 balls) steadied the ship with a brilliant 168-run partnership.

Justus was caught out with the score at 206/4 followed by his partner Meade just five runs later.

Branden Grutter (31 runs from 29 balls) and Rynard de Lange (23 runs from 14 balls) helped get the team to a good score of 277.

With the leather, United hardly broke a sweat as they wrapped up Kwa-Thema for only 100 runs.

Justus (4/22 in 10 overs), Gamble (3/32 in 10 overs) and de Lange (2/10 in 3.2 overs) did the damage with the ball to ensure a 178-run bonus point victory.

Commenting on the result, skipper Gamble said: “It was a good win for us.

“We were pretty clinical throughout the day.

“A terrific partnership between Aidan and JP gave us a good total and then all our bowlers did well.

“We never really gave them a chance to get into the game.

“We will look to back it up this weekend and keep pushing for a play-off spot.”

The team will play Actonville Spurs at Lord’s Cricket Grounds, in Actonville, on Sunday, March 11.

• In other results on Sunday, United’s Premier Reserve XI lost by 39 runs to Springs Old Boys while the Colts XI defeated Kempton Park by 164 runs.

Duncan Brown was the star of the show with 110 runs while CJ Labuschagne bagged superb bowling figures of 5/7 in three overs.
