Flooding causes major havoc at United Cricket Club

A request for comment was sent to the Ekurhuleni metro regarding the state of the facility.

The heavy rains that fell in Brakpan on the night of Monday, February 13 arrived with a vengeance and caused major concerns over the future of United Cricket Club’s tenure at Hosking Park.

It is the worst storm that the club, formed at the beginning of the 2008-2009 season, through the amalgamation of Brakpan Cricket Club and Airfield Youth Cricket Club (AYCC), has experienced.

“The water level swept through our clubhouse and ablution facilities at 500mm above ground level, damaging a huge amount of our stock and equipment with an estimated damage of around R35 000,” said Des Gamble, facilities manager at the club.

“This is by no means a new phenomenon as it happens at least once a year, but this season it is the fourth time.”

The force of the water pressure was so extreme that the A-Field boundary ropes were found wrapped around a tree at the adjacent Brakpan Rugby Club perimeter wall along Elliot Street.

Part of the rugby club’s wall had also come down after the storm.

In the past The Herald has reported on the infrastructure problems at the club and the issue of sewage spilling onto the outfield, which forced important Premier League matches to be cancelled.

The situation looks dire for the club, which has barely played any matches at their facility in the second half of the 2016/2017 Eastern Cricket Union campaign as a result of rainouts and saturated fields.

United’s Premier League side are scheduled to play Tembisa at Hosking A on Sunday, February 19; however, that will more than likely not take place.

A request for comment was sent to the Ekurhuleni metro regarding the state of the facility on Wednesday, February 15.
