United get back to winning ways

The target was reached in 35.1 overs.

United Cricket Club’s Premier XI bounced back from last weekend’s away defeat to Boksburg, with a comfortable six-wicket bonus-point win, at home to Duduza, on Sunday, October 16.

The team went about their business with minimal fuss, to secure maximum points in their second home encounter of the season.

Batting first, at Hosking Park, their visitors would be bowled out in the 49th over for 191 runs, with Oswaldo de Sousa (3/33 in six overs), Tshepo Motaung (3/28 in 6.3 overs) and Branden Grutter (2/28 in 10 overs) doing the damage with the leather for United.

With the bat it was the opening pair of Vaughn Humphrey (53 runs) and Jose van der Berg (59 runs) whose contributions at the top of the order helped steer the team closer to the target.

Skipper Justin Gamble’s knock of 31 runs must also be noted.

The target was reached in 35.1 overs.

On a Sunday that dished up a few surprise results around the league, the captain is pleased that his team wrapped up things as clinically as they did.

“It was a good way to bounce back from the loss to Boksburg,” said Gamble.

“The bowlers did a steady job.

“Oswaldo bowled well with the new ball and the spinners tied things down in the middle period.

“Tshepo had a good spell at the death, too.

“Vaughn and Jose then put the game to bed with their opening partnership.”

The team will pay their first visit to KwaThema’s Prince Thethe Oval on Sunday, October 23, and will be striving to pick up their first away win of the campaign.

• The club’s Promotion League XI defeated Bedfordview by four wickets, while the Directors XI suffered an 85-run defeat to Kempton Park, on Sunday.
