Brakpan Pigeon Racing Club’s birds were liberated at Hannover, approximately 650km from home.
It took the first pigeons approximately eight hours and 10 minutes to complete the race.
A strong north-westerly wind brought the flying speed of the birds down to approximately 1 300mpm and Cyril Jasper won the derby race with a blue bar hen.
The achievement was made even greater when he also took second place.
To claim a first and a second position of 390 pigeons in the club, as well as sixth and 14th places in the overall Gauteng Pigeon Union (a total of 2 446 pigeons competing in the race) is a remarkable accomplishment.
“Very few people realise the amount of care, training and planning that goes along with preparing a racing pigeon to compete at this level,” said club chairman Etienne van der Walt.
“It is certainly not just simply taking any pigeon and entering it into a 650km race.
“The management of the club takes great care that pigeons entered are in an excellent state of health and that members entering pigeons take good care of them.”
