Feather in the cap for Pike and Jooste

Fanciers from Brakpan Pigeon Racing Club continued their season on Saturday, August 13, when their birds were liberated at Springfontein, approximately 514km from home.

The young birds were liberated at 7.30am and the old birds at 8.15am.

Due to a strong headwind of 20km/h at times the race became much more difficult than what was initially anticipated.

Despite the harsh race veteran Ken Pike managed to clock his bird in the old series at 3.34pm and Tom Jooste clocked two birds at 3.37pm.

These birds managed to complete the race in approximately eight hours at a speed of 1 137mpm.

The results obtained by the two Brakpan members is excellent considering that the club winner Pike also obtained a 13th place standing in the overall Gauteng Pigeon Union (GPU) results while Jooste’s two birds helped him place 18th and 19th in the GPU results.

“These results are even more remarkable when you realize that there were approximately 1 500 pigeons competing in the race,” said club chairman Etienne van der Walt.

“Congratulations to Ken and Tom.

“We are proud to have such dedicated members.”

Top three club standings from the Springfontein race are:

• Young birds: 1 Thys Matthysen, 2 Thys Matthysen, 3 Louis du Plooy.

• Open birds: 1 Ken Pike, 2 Tom Jooste, 3 Tom Jooste.
