Wrestlers test their mettle at continental level

Brakpan Wrestling Club has produced some top class talent throughout the years and the club continues to do so.

On Monday, July 11, a pair of exciting young wrestlers, Matthew Bartlett and Ondrej Dvoulety boarded a plane from OR Tambo International Airport and headed to Algeria to showcase their skills on the mat at the Cadet African Championships from Thursday, July 14, to Saturday, July 16.

Bartlett is a Grade 11 pupil at Hoërskool Stoffberg and Dvoulety is a Grade Nine pupil at Hoërskool Hans Moore in Benoni.

The former is no stranger to the continental championships having taken part in two Cadet African Championships in the past.

He earned a silver medal on each occasion, but now has his sights firmly set on claiming the illusive gold medal this year.

Dvoulety is a newcomer to cadet wrestling and will be debuting at the event.

His club is confident he will do well.

Both of the boys managed gold medals at the recent Cadet South African Championships that were hosted in the Brakpan Indoor Centre on July 1 and 2.

Bartlett won his 14th South African Championships medal when he won his 69kg cadet freestyle category while Dvoulety claimed his second South African Championships medal when he won his 76kg cadet freestyle category in what was regarded as the upset of the tournament, proving that he is definitely a young wrestler to watch for the future.

Both talents will have to earn themselves at least a bronze medal in order to qualify for the Cadet World Championships that will take place in September in Georgia.
