Points just keep on piling up for ‘Panne’

Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV are cruising along in their Valke Peregrine League campaign.

The “Panne” welcomed a young Benoni outfit to Bosman Stadium on Saturday, April 9, and despite their opponents fronting up to the challenge posed by the defending champions, just avoided another 100-point score-line by winning 90-10.

This result means that captain Francois “Bones” Robbertse and his men have gone unbeaten in four Peregrine matches and achieved a total haul of 350 points.

They have also crossed the whitewash on 53 occasions (an average of 13.25 tries per match).

The massive score-lines could quiet down in upcoming fixtures when the side plays much stronger opposition in the form of Vereeniging, Springs and Boksburg.

On Saturday, Brakpan scored 14 tries with four Panne players dotting down twice including wingers Thinus Ueckermann and Juanrich Botha and fullback Tobie Strydom.

Hooker Vernon du Preez was mightily impressed and showed some incredible support play on the day.

Du Preez also recorded two five-pointers of his own.

The Panne switched off slightly in the dying embers of the clash and paid the price as Benoni went over for their sole try of the day through their inside centre Takkie van Staden.

They also lost prop forward Dirk Odendaal for perhaps the remainder of the season after he tore ligaments in his knee.

Despite their large score-lines of late there are still some niggling concerns that coach Reghardt Botha and the team will need to iron out to get to optimal performance levels.

All in all, however, the Panne are still on the charge and a daunting prospect for any club which stands in their way.

Brakpan’s try scorers on Saturday were: Jaunrich Botha (two), Thinus Ueckermann (two), Vernon du Preez (two), Tobie Strydom (two), Dwane Morrison, Raymond Herron, Francois Robbertse, Ronwin Roets, JP Snyman and Dirk Odendaal. Conversions: Roets (six), Ashley Buchler (three) and Neil van der Walt.
