‘Panne’ vanquish students in Vanderbijl

Following two consecutive matches, where they scored two consecutive centuries, Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV were expected to make mincemeat of Saturday’s opponents, NWU Vaal.

Although they did not amass another 100-plus points in Vanderbijlpark, the team from the Bosman Stadium still managed to emerge victorious on their travels, with a 54-14 result.

Poor decision-making and handling errors, which could have resulted in more points on the scoreboard, marred an otherwise convincing performance.

The ease in which the “Panne” side has cantered to wins has seemingly placed them in a comfort zone in the Valke Peregrine League and the defending champions need to be aware that they will need to maintain focus ahead of clashes with the stronger opponents.

The Brakpan forwards were impressive, with loosehead prop Ian Oosthuizen particularly outstanding on the day.

Young winger Juanrich Botha ran in a second consecutive hat-trick of tries, following his three scores in the home match versus Nigel, on March 12.

Try scorers were: Jaunrich Botha (3), Leon “Sweef” Potgieter, JP Snyman, Ian Oosthuizen, Theo Becker and Vernon du Preez.

Conversions: Ashley Buchler (five), Gido Horn (two).

The team will square up against Benoni Rugby Club on Saturday, April 9, at the Bosman Stadium.

The Benoni outfit were thumped 93-21 at home to Vereeniging on Saturday, and that result bodes well for another Brakpan cricket score.
