Wrestlers enjoy German experience

On October 26, two Brakpan wrestlers, Matthew Bartlett (16) and Fernando Booysen (13), left South Africa for a two month wrestling exchange programme in Germany.

Both boys were invited by Leipzig Sport Schools’ wrestling coach, Daniel Wilde, to come train at the school for two months.

During the exchange programme they will be attending various training camps and tournaments in and around Germany.

On November 1, the boys were in Aalen for a training camp where they had the opportunity to compete in the Aalen Tournament.

Booysen came first in his weight category against three opponents, while Bartlett fought hard in his weight managing to come second in a weight of 15 wrestlers.

“We are immensely proud of these two wrestlers and know that they will do great things in the future,” said club secretary Gussie Bartlett.

The boys are currently at the Rabenberg, the German higher performance centre, in preparation for Kleinoshteim (a big international tournament) this weekend.

“The competition is fierce here, we came here hoping for more international exposure and experience and we have not been disappointed,” says Matthew, who already has three Kleinoshteim tournaments under his belt.

He hopes to surpass his previous best of second place and come first this year.

Brakpan Wrestling Club wished both wrestlers the best of luck for the coming months.
