‘Panne’ pop the champagne

Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV capped an undefeated season with success in the final of the 2015 Valke Peregrine League, against a tough Vereeniging outfit, on Saturday, August 22.

The 42-14 victory at Barnard Stadium, in Kempton Park, means that the club has now lifted the Peregrine League trophy for five successive years.

It also means that the boys from Bosman Stadium will also play in community club rugby’s elite competition, the 2016 Cell C Community Club.

It is a massive achievement for the 2013 Community Cup bronze medallists after they missed out on a spot in this year’s tournament.

On Saturday, the side was 14-7 down at the halfway mark and had to up the tempo and show their class in the second 40 minutes.

Injuries to skipper Francois “Bones” Robbertse (following a tip-tackle), scrumhalf Shaun Botes and fullback Tobie Botha highlighted just how hard it was for the Panne on the day.

The tactical play from Ashley Buchler (who moved from flyhalf into the fullback position following Botha’s injury) was brilliant and he was reliable with the boot, too, having converted all six of his team’s tries.

Wing Leon “Sweef” Potgieter made it a season to remember as his first half try marked his 22nd five-pointer of the season.

The win solidifies the Panne’s positio as the best club rugby team in the Valke region and they will be striving to become the best open community side in the country when next year’s Community Cup comes around.
