Top of the ‘Peck’ing order

Brakpan businessman Ismail Peck is in a terrific position as he rules the roost in the Super Saloon Inland Championships at Zwartkops in his Diff and Gearbox Mercedes SLK Rotary.

On Saturday, July 25, Peck qualified in pole position and won the first of two races by more than seven seconds.

In the second and final race, the driver decided to try something different.

“Due to the cold conditions, my chief mechanic, André Johnson, and I decided to change the jetting on my carburettor for the second race, only to find out in the final race that I had a misfire on my car under 5000rpm,” he told the Herald.

“The flag dropped and Susan Cockeram came flying past me as my car just would not go.

“I then got the revs up and chased her for eight laps, trying to pass her.

“On the ninth lap, with Jody Viana and Brendan Martines right up against me, I passed her to take the win.”

Peck is now in a strong position in the championships, with a lead of more than 25 points.

Peck has won three of the five races that have been held this year.

Clutch failure ended his hopes of winning in one of the races and he did not race in the other.

With four events left the driver is certain that the title will be his.

“I had bad luck at seven previous oval championships, but it seems that this year things are working for me on the long circuit,” he said

His next competition will be at Phakisa Raceway, a circuit at which he has never raced before.
