Locals conquer the mighty marathon

The 90th edition of the Comrades Marathon took place on Sunday, May 31, and a number of road warriors from Brakpan’s Carnival Runners club took on and finished the world's oldest and largest ultra-marathon.

Some runners, however, could not handle the demanding nature of this year’s up run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg and either fell out of the race or missed the 12-hour cut-off.

Petros Mbokazi was the club’s top finisher, in a time of seven hours, 51 minutes and eight seconds over the 87.7km route.

He earned a Bill Rowan medal.

Mbokazi was followed by Lucky Seopela who crossed the line in a time of eight hours, eight minutes and 58 seconds for his Bill Rowan medal.

Other Bill Rowan Medals were achieved by Sipho Dumakude (8:35:35) and Tseko Joseph Tsotetsi (8:47:31).

Bronze medals were won by Nzima Zikhali, Thabo Sauhatsi, Donovan de Leeuw and Stuurman Mnqobani.

Magda Botha (11:33:17), running her 10th marathon, joined the prestigious Green Number Club when she finished the gruelling distance to get her hands on a Vic Clapham medal.

Jimmy Masango was the last man home from the club and got over the line in a time of 11 hours, 55 minutes and four seconds, to avoid the 12-hour cut.
