Hat-trick heaven in Vanderbijl

Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV took on a familiar opponent in North West University (NWU) Vaal, in Vanderbijl Park, during their first encounter of the Valke Peregrine League, on Saturday, April 18.

On a sopping wet and cold day, away from home, the “Panne” ran complete riot in Vanderbijl Park as three Brakpan players each claimed a hat-trick of tries in the 58-3 mauling of NWU Vaal.

The teams have already clashed on four occasions this year and the score line of 58-3 has become the average result between the two sides.

The always strong Brakpan forward pack dominated all facets of play on Saturday and gave their back-line ample opportunity to run amok.

Brakpan’s wingers, Thinus Ueckermann and newcomer Sweef Potgieter, scored three tries apiece, as did scrum-half Shaun Botes.

Replacement scrum-half Neil van der Walt scored a lone five-pointer.

Gido Horn converted two of the tries, while Botes and Kyle Hinton also slotted a conversion each.

The team will be pleased that their pursuit of 2016 Cell C Community Cup rugby has gotten off to the perfect start, but they will have to wait until Saturday, May 9, to play again as the league takes a break due to the upcoming public holidays.

On May 9, the men from Bosman Stadium will face another away day proposition as they take on big rivals Boksburg Rugby Club at PG Park in Boksburg.
