The battle has commenced

The Eastern Cricket Union’s inaugural “Battle of the Roses” Premier League T20 competition got going on Saturday, March 14, on the three fields at United Cricket Club’s Hosking Park in Brakpan.

The concept of the T20 tournament sees six Easterns semi-professional players skippering six “franchise” teams, namely Benoni Northerns’ Ernest Kemm (Kemm Gladiators), Tembisa’s Thando Bula (Bula Magic), Kempton Park’s Grant Thomson (Grant’s Giants), Actonville Spurs’ Clayton August (The Underdogs), Kempton Park’s Wesley Marshall (Marshies Marauders) and Tembisa’s Israel Hlengane (VW Hurricanes).

Players were selected on a draft basis by the various captains.

Results for the first round of matches on Saturday are:

Kemm Gladiators beat Grant’s Giants (Kemm Gladiators scored 174/4 batting first, Grant’s Giants all-out for 145)

VW Hurricanes beat Marshies Marauders by six wickets (Marshies Marauders scored 124/9 batting first, VW Hurricanes scored 128/4)

Bula Magic beat The Underdogs (The Underdogs scored 150/8 batting first, Bula Magic 156/5).

This weekend sees a total of nine games being played: three matches, starting at 2pm on Saturday, March 21, and a double-header Sunday, March 22, of six fixtures.
