‘Panne’ dot down twenty times in Pretoria

Brakpan absolutely annihilate TUT.

After going on a rampage to secure a 52-13 victory over North West University (NWU) Vaal at Bosman Stadium on Saturday, February 28, Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV was in boisterous spirits ahead of their trip to Pretoria, to clash with the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) second XV on Saturday, March 7.

It was clear from the outset that there was a monumental gap in class between the two teams as the visiting “Panne” team, and their forwards in particular, ran complete riot in their Assupol Club Series encounter that ended with a cricket-like score line of 130-5.

In total, the Brakpan team crossed over the hosts’ try line on 20 occasions (exactly a century of points), of which 15 of those tries were scored by forward players.

Brakpan hooker Jaco Lotter will remember his outing against TUT.

The player, with the number two on the back of his jersey, will tell his grandchildren about the day he scored four tries, a rare feat for a hooker.

It is also not everyday that a prop (Vernon du Preez) and a lock (Dean van der Merwe) each score a hat trick of tries, but that is exactly what transpired on Saturday.

Skipper Francois “Bones” Robbertse, a lock forward, and vice-captain Franco Booysen each scored a brace, while loose forwards Wikus van der Berg, Shaun Rheeder and Theo Mynhardt each got their names on the score sheet.

Tobie Strydom, Panda van Loggenberg, Gido Horn and Neil van der Walt completed the brutal bombardment of the TUT defensive structures.

Kyle Hinton slotted ten conversions and Ronnie Roets five in the win.

Brakpan will now play on Saturday, March 14, in the final of the Assupol Club Series against NWU Vaal at Loftus in Pretoria, the club’s Lilywhites (second team) will play Pretoria Bobbies in their final.
