Welfare warriors wheel to St Lucia

A throng of 25 enthusiastic riders donned their cleats and hit the saddle for their grueling 605km, four-day journey ride to St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal, from Carnival City on Saturday, December 13.

The East Rand 2 East Coast (ER2EC) journey saw the riders and five crew members stopping over in Standerton, Vryheid and Hluhluwe and a finish in St Lucia.

Started in 2010 by avid cyclist Julian Bryant, and his wife Pascale, the ER2EC is staged annually to raise funds for worthy non-profit organisations.

One such cyclist is Sean Wheeler, a Bedfordview resident, who has taken part in the event from its inception,

“My nominated charity is Thembalani, a centre that cares for people with disabilities,” he said.

“They really struggle, like most charities, to get funding in these tough times.

“Most of the guys riding the ER2EC are keen cyclists, so it is a great opportunity for us to just slow the pace down a bit and enjoy the ride.

“The Thembalani Centre looks after my father and that is the main reason why I am supporting them as my nominated charity,” Wheeler added.

At the start of the race the riders had raised R140 000 and were optimistic that they would raise a combined R200 000 by the time they reached St Lucia.
