Sammy and company win at Willowmoore

The Titans enjoyed their second T20 win in Benoni.

As dark, intimidating clouds circulated above Willowmoore Park on the night of Wednesday, November 26, most cricket revellers got that feeling that it was going to be another typically wet Willowmoore encounter between the Unlimited Titans and Sunfoil Dolphins.

The storm, however, stayed away and a full 40 overs of Ram Slam T20 Challenge cricket was played in Benoni.

The Titans’ West Indian skipper Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bat.

At first the decision seemed to be a bad one as the home team slipped to 17/2 inside four overs, but number five bat Qaasim Adams stepped up and played a controlled knock of 78 runs off 53 deliveries (nine fours and two sixes) to help set up a challenging total of 167/7 in their 20 overs.

When the KwaZulu Natal team went into bat they endured a shaky start to their innings when their captain Morné van Wyk was caught at backward point from Junior Dala, a player that has come through the Easterns amateur ranks, before Jonathan Vandiar was caught in the covers off a delivery from former Actonville Spurs all-rounder David Wiese as the Dolphins crashed to 12/2.

A 55-run partnership between Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Cody Chetty helped boost the Dolphins’ chase, but they could not continue their work as both batsmen lost their wickets.

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo (34 off 18 balls) and Khaya Zondo (25) tried in vain to chase down the score but their efforts just fell short with the Dolphins suffering a 19-run defeat.
