Historic bowling club needs more support

Brakpan Bowling Club needs more support.

Since 1919, Brakpan Bowling Club has been a prominent fixture in the town.

With the sport on somewhat of a decline in recent years, though, membership and growth of the club has also taken a downturn.

Up step husband-and-wife pair Louw and Betsie Serfontein.

The couple, who were recently elected as the club’s president and vice-president, respectively, is hoping to revitalise the historic club by attracting and creating a new, younger membership base.

The club is registered with the Ekurhuleni Bowls district and a number of its members are competing in the various leagues and competitions.

They also offer social bowls on Friday afternoons, from 4pm, for inexperienced players to learn the sport and to also have a bit of fun while doing it, without the pressure of serious competition.

To keep this social bowls initiative going, the Serfonteins have appealed to anybody who may have secondhand bowls lying around to contact them, as they are willing to purchase old equipment.

The classic clubhouse, under the watchful eye of long-time bartender Lennox Lepheana, is a wonderful facility for functions and parties.

He also plays the sport and encourages everybody to give it a test to see if they like it.

The club’s gardens have also received a facelift and provide an excellent setting for wholesome family fun, as well as competitive bowls.

“The sport is struggling and we seriously need young people to save it,” said Betsie.

“This game is for everybody, young and old, and we urge everybody to come and give it a try.”
