Payback at Bosman

Brakpan Rugby Club's first XV crushed rivals Boksburg 47-16 on Saturday.

It was payback time for Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV, with a devastating 47-16 win at home over rivals Boksburg, in the Valke Pergerine League, on Saturday, July 12.

The Brakpan team were defeated by a solitary point at Prince George Park, in Boksburg, at the end of May, so revenge was the only thing on the minds of skipper Francois “Bones” Robbertse and his men, at Bosman Stadium, last weekend.

The team welcomed back Gido Horn (fullback) and Franco Booysen (centre) to the team, and their impact was immediately felt.

The “Panne” machine was ruthless, particularly with their forwards, and outplayed the Boksburg outfit at all levels.

The combined effort of forwards Vernon du Preez, Robbertse, Dean van der Merwe and Theo Mynhardt proved to be too strong for the Boksburg defence and, between them, they scored one of the tries of the season in the first move of the game, as prop du Preez dotted down.

There was a period of about 20 minutes when Brakpan conceded a number of penalties, but they soon came together and the floodgates in the visitors’ defensive line soon opened.

An additional six tries would follow for the “Panne”, courtesy of Booysen, Robbertse, Christo Joubert, JP Steyn (replacement), Tobie Strydom and Jaco Lotter, while flyhalf Dewald Nel kicked 12 points to give the first team sweet revenge over Boksburg.

“The team are again playing to their potential,” said Harry Nieuwenhuis, Brakpan Rugby Club chairman.

“It was nice to get some payback against Boksburg and we are now looking forward to our game against Springs, away from home, on Saturday.”

After losing by a last-minute penalty to Springs, on June 7, Brakpan will be aiming to employ the same revenge tactics at Olympia Park, on Saturday.

n Meanwhile, the Brakpan second XV won 48-14, the third team lost 28-21, and the u-21 team lost 37-10, on Saturday.
