Developing future champs

The Eastern Junior Club Cricket Association (EJCCA) tournament took place at local clubs this past weekend.

The 10th annual Eastern Junior Club Cricket Association’s (EJCCA) u-13, u-15, u-16, u-17 and u-19 Carnival City Cricket Festival took place at Willowmoore Park, United Cricket Club (Brakpan) and Actonville Spurs Cricket Club, from July 2 to 6.

Junior cricket teams from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and Mozambique will join the EJCCA junior representative teams in one of South Africa’s premier cricket development events.

Andrew Grobler, chairman of the EJCCA, said that the event is rated as highly as some of the national schools cricket weeks in terms of the development and exposure of young cricketers in this and neighbouring countries.

Grobler said: “EJCCA’s major focus is on the promotion of players from local townships, in a bid to play international games and gain international experience.

“The EJCCA project strives for the development of players, promoting social integration and creating education opportunities for young players through bursaries at local schools.

“The aim is to pull young players from the township, who will go on to play an active role in the sport away from the social ills.”
