Brutal Lockyer innings takes game away

After two consecutive wins in the Eastern Premier League, Brakpan-based United Cricket Club’s Premier XI were aiming to take their recent good form into the away day match-up against CBC Old Boys in Boksburg on Sunday.

Skipper Justin Gamble’s team bowled first and were feeling confident when they had their opposition at 100/3, before the first drinks break.

But, when revered batsman Nicholas Lockyer stepped into the batting crease the flow of the innings quickly changed in the favour of the home side.

Lockyer bludgeoned the United bowlers around the park and played some fantastic shots on his way to a fine 126.

CBC Old Boys finished their 50 overs with the bat and notched up a large score of 235/7.

The United batsmen were always going to need to play well, but wickets fell relatively cheaply as the team were bowled out in the 44th over.

CBC spinner Jean Rossouw bamboozled the United batting order and bagged figures of 6/33.

The captain was the top scorer for his team, with 24, while Brendon Frost and Ryan Bond both got into the 20s, but could not capitalise, as their team were bowled out for 149.

According to team manager Des Gamble, United were defeated by a better team and their bowling attack was completely dismantled by Lockyer.

“He clouted our bowlers left, right and centre and we simply had no answers for him,” Gamble said.

“Our batsmen chucked their wickets away and their spinner spun us into a quandary.

“We have been left to lick our wounds and will now have to get ready for Duduza this weekend.”
