More disappointment for Prems

The recent string of losses continued for United Cricket Club’s Premier XI, against Springs Old Boys (SOB), at Hosking Park, on Sunday, November 24.

Skipper Justin Gamble’s team fancied their chances of beating Old Boys at home and, after bowling first and wrapping up their opposition for 141 in 37.1 overs, United felt that they were in with a chance of successfully chasing down the total.

United’s opening bowlers picked up a wicket apiece, but it was the spin of Gamble that did the trick, with the captain bagging a five-wicket haul and achieving figures of 5/16 in seven overs, while JP Meade (2/43) and Branden Grutter (1/23) also got among the wickets.

United needed a firm display with the bat but, again, they were to fall short after being wrapped up for 91 in 26.1 overs, albeit due to some questionable umpiring decisions.

Grutter, who scored 50 against Kempton Park the previous week, offered the only real resistance, with a score of 34.

Old Boys’ Dylan Smalberger was the best player with the leather, and picked up figures of 4/20 in 6.1 overs.

United’s team manager Des Gamble said the team were left embarrassed as they thought they had restricted Springs to an attainable score.

“We didn’t get enough runs and are disappointed by the result,” he said.

The team will hope to rectify things when they take on Actonville Spurs Cricket Club in a double-header, in the next two weeks.

n At United’s Promotion League home ground at St Dunstan’s College, in Benoni, on Sunday, Divan de Beer’s team were victorious by one run against Daveyton, in an exciting match.

Louis Geldenhuys (41) was the best performer with the willow, and Wilber van Dyk (4/34) was the best United bowler.
