No accountability for sidewalk maintenance

Where are the days when everybody took pride in their surroundings?

Johanna Barnard writes by email:

I really hope you can help me.

I have asked Ekurhuleni numerous times if they will cut the grass on the sidewalk behind the Brakpan Police Station, along Taft Street.

I phoned a few times and the response was that it was not their problem – police are responsible for cutting the grass here.

I phoned the police station and their response was I must phone Ekurhuleni.

I phoned the metro again a few weeks later, and again the response was they do not cut sidewalks.

I then phoned the police station and was transferred to a colonel, whose language left much to be desired, who told me to phone the DA as we voted for them.

I was eventually given a number of a person who has contacts at the municipality, but have had no luck.

In the meantime the grass is really long, looks untidy, and have you seen the rats?

Where are the days when everybody took pride in their surroundings?

Now, for the real jackpot question, who is responsible for keeping our sidewalks neat and tidy?

Editor’s note: Comment was requested from Brakpan police and the following response was received from Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander:

“The police station is responsible for cutting the grass on the sidewalk and the grass was cut last week.

“The equipment breaks from time to time and sometimes the machinery requires maintenance.

“As for the complaint against the SAPS member, the complainant is welcome to lay a formal complaint at the police station, which will then be investigated.

“The complainant is thanked for the criticism as it drives us to improve.”
