SAPS should clamp down on fireworks

Vidette van Greuning writes by email: I live in Hoy Street, Brakpan Central.

The house behind us has a small community of people living there, in every room.

They fired bomb crackers and other fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

One of the bomb crackers went off near our yard, I think they may have thrown it over our wall, and scared my dog so much that he ran into our back door.

It took a while to calm him down after that.

I know people like to set off fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

We used to go to the Carnival City show every year.

Perhaps if we had professional shows like other countries, we wouldn’t have this problem?

Why don’t the police go after the shops selling the fireworks?

I know of a certain shop in Voortrekker Road that sells boxes and boxes of fireworks at cheap prices.

Do something about it!

Or are the police too busy partying… enough said.

Editor’s note: Comment was requested from Brakpan police and the following response was received from spokesperson Capt Joep Joubert:

“The police, in conjunction with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, have conducted operations by visiting shops that sell fireworks,” he said.

“You must have a licence to sell fireworks and this is regularly monitored.

“We are doing everything in our power to clamp down on fireworks.”
