Are cops exempt from traffic rules?

'Brakpan resident'' writes by email: I was on my way home yesterday (November 6), on Heidelberg Road, travelling towards Carnival City, when this police car came flying past me and pushed himself in front of me and another car.

There was not even space for him and he did not have his indicators on (I don’t think he knew how to use them).

If I did not think quickly he would have pushed me off the road — he did not even have his uniform on.

I then hooted at him and showed him that he must look, and he just threw his hands in the air like he didn’t give a damn about what he just did.

You could see he was not on duty, nor on his way to an emergency.

This road has a speed limit of 80km/h and the way he was going through the cars was crazy.

I think the police must also obey the rules of the road if they do not have an emergency to get to.

They shouldn’t think they can just do as they wish because they have a badge.

How can they expect us, as road-users, to obey the rules if they do not set the example to others?

They are supposed to lead us, but they don’t.

People will also do as they do, because they take the law into their own hands.

Editor’s note: Comment was requested from Brakpan Police and Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the station commander, responded as follows: “I can confirm that this is not a Brakpan SAPS vehicle.

“We are in the process of determining to which station this vehicle belongs and this information will then be sent to that station’s fleet manager.

“The matter will then be investigated and the necessary steps taken.”

Joubert added that police officers are not above the law.
