Traffic lights cause problems

S Stabelberg, Brakpan, writes:

What is the Ekurhuleni’s Metro’s problem with changing all the robots on Heidelberg Road?

In the mornings only three or four cars can cross the road before the light changes to red again.

Motorists travelling on the Heidelberg Road, from the Geluksdal and Heidelberg side are lucky, because the light stays green for much longer.

Motorists coming from the Minnebron/Sonneveld side have to queue at the robot forever. Sometimes the light changes five times before we can eventually get over the crossing.

This causes us to be late for work, only because nothing is done to rectify the situation.

Please can the traffic lights be changed to how they used to operate?

Editor’s note: The metro commented as follows: The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has requested its appointed traffic engineering consultant to optimise the peak-period cycle timings at this intersection, as there were complaints of delays and congestion.

This was done and the revised cycle timings were implemented at the end of June 2013.

This EMM will conduct an investigation during the peak hours to determine if the new timing plans are causing delays during the am peak only, or at all peak times.

Adjustments will then be made to the timing plans if the intersection is operating worse than before. The aim of optimisation is to improve the capacity at this intersection.
