In the spotlight

Getting to know Palesa Mohale.

Palesa Mohale (18) is this year’s president of Brakpan High School’s Representative Council of Learners (RCL). The friendly teenager lives in Flamingo Ridge, in Leachville, with her parents Hilda and Desmond Mamaila. She has two brothers, Mzwandile (15), who also attends Brakpan High School, and four-year-old Ofentse.

• You are the president of the RCL. Did you ever think you would be in this position?

I would never have imagined it.

I was ecstatic on the day it was announced and I still feel the same way, because it gives me the opportunity to make the difference I’ve always wanted to make.

• What are your duties as president?

To give fellow RCL members direction, in order to better and improve the standards at Brakpan High School.

I need to ensure all aspects of school are well taken care of in order to fulfil the needs of the learners.

• Which school subject do you enjoy the most?

Definitely maths.

It’s quite challenging and gives you the opportunity to think outside of the box.

I enjoy things that challenge the mind.

• Which subject is your least favourite?

Tourism. It just doesn’t appeal to me.

• Do you play sport or participate in extra-mural activities?

Everything is just too hectic at the moment.

I’m focusing on matric and my school work.

• Have you started planning for your Matric Farewell?

I haven’t, but my mom has.

• What are your plans after matric?

I want to go to university and study medicine.

• Do you think there is hope for the young people of this country?

I certainly do.

We just need the right motivation and we could really change the world we live in.

• If you had one wish that could come true, what would it be?

To have an impact on the world.

To die knowing that I’ve made a difference.

• What is your dream holiday destination?

Dubai, I would love to go.

Everything about it appeals to me.

• Who is your favourite singer?

Definitely Beyoncé.

Not only does she have an awesome voice, but she works hard.

I like her as an individual.
